Types of coaching

Our DiplomaCoaching follows a set of guiding principles as described on the “What is Coaching?” page.

Within that, however, there are a range of approaches to coaching which seek to get the best result for the client depending on the goal and concern that is being worked with.

Many coaching schools only teach one key approach leaving their coaches limited in some circumstances.  At the Smart School, we believe that to be a great coach, you need to have skills from a range of these approaches.

So what different kinds of coaching are there?

Below are some of the key approaches to coaching:

  • Solutions-focused Coaching
  • Behavioural Coaching
  • Cognitive Behavioural Coaching
  • Emotional Intelligence Coaching
  • NLP Coaching
  • Brief Coaching
  • Transpersonal Coaching
  • Appreciative Coaching

At this stage, it is not important to describe them in detail but it is important to know that different approaches exist since this will enable you to offer a more flexible approach to your coachee’s needs.

Being able to call on a range of styles is extremely important to complex coaching such as life-coaching and exceutive coaching. Unlike most training providers, the Smart School’s ITOL Diploma uniquely offers a comprehensive, integrated approach to coaching with skills from each of the coaching styles taught.
