What’s a small business coach for?

C2C April 2012

I just came back from three days cycling C2C from Whitehaven to Tynemouth and, as is often the case when I undertake these arduous cycle rides, I got to thinking about business.

And it struck me that riding C2C across windswept moorlands, up tortuous lakeland hills and through boggy paths is somewhat like running a business! It’s a challenging, long hard slog that makes you question why you started in the first place!

There are the stiff legs, the aching backside, the tense shoulders. There’s the soggy gear, muddy bike and dog-eared maps.

But then there are the sweeping downhills, the lingering lunches at pubs, the sun breaking through the clouds and, of course, that terrific sense of achievement when you hit another milestone.

It’s living and being and doing.

And I think the role of a small business coach is to be there on that ride. To help your clients through the tough stages whilst keeping an eye on the good stuff to come.

To pursue the cycling analogy, it’s helping the client find themselves on the map so they can measure their progress, it’s making sure they’re on the right bike and that it’s oiled and ready to go, it’s cycling alongside and encouraging them to make those last strenuous efforts to reach the top.

And it’s celebrating when the downhill comes and the client can fly with the wind in their hair and a feeling of elation. It’s being there when the client hits the end and say, “What next?” with a tired but joyful smile on their face!

That’s the joy of business coaching.

Are you a jack or a master? How to focus for results without becoming a fossil!

Being a jack of all trades has some benefits.

Jacks become good learners, they adapt to changing environments, they keep up to date, they change their tactics, they experiment.

But jacks also flutter like crane flies from one trendy approach to marketing to another, never truly getting the best from any one and becoming frustrated at the sheer number of things that they have to keep up to date with.  They can often be heard to cry, “Not another social media site!”, and then dive in to try it out only to abandon it for the next big thing.

So what about the master?

Well these guys get to know one approach inside out and make it work.  They get results and become consistent performers with it.  They become master networkers or master advertisers, master direct response writers or master email markerters.  They know which side their bread is buttered and they butter it frequently.

But then the environment changes. Interruption marketing suddenly runs into the new social media world of permission marketing.  Ads stop working.  Networks shrink. Business dries up.

They look around and like the humans in the classic book by Spencer Johnson say, “Who moved my cheese?”

So what to do?

Should you be a master or a jack?

Well, the answer must be somewhere in between.

Don’t try to be everywhere doing everything for everyone.  You simply can’t make anything work effectively when you’re running around like decapitated poultry.  But don’t get stuck in one way of doing things and become a fossil.

Stay lively but stay focused.

Choose some key methods for business growth and make them work.  But don’t close down your learning.  Keep an eye on your environment.  See what’s coming up.  Stay in tune with the changing results of your main strategies and tactics and be ready to change.

For the Smart School, I still find Google Adwords and Facebook Ads work very well and so do expos such as Mind Body Spirit where we’ll be exhibiting in May.  But evidence tells me shows are becoming less effective.  Less people are attending.  So Facebook pages, Google+ and YouTube are now very much under my gaze as I explore how to make these work well for my business.

As a business coach, there are lessons here for you and how you get business but likewise for your clients.  Stay ready for change but stay focused on results.

Step back to move forward

Take a step back to move forward

Small business owners can be heard to complain of many things: lack of time, poor sales, low revenue, high costs, too much to do, business rates, flagging economy. You name it and there’s a good chance to you’ll hear it.

But there’s one thing a business owner can never truly complain about.  Their essential role in the success or failure of their business.

You see, in the end, every business owner, when confronted by their ability to make a difference in their results, even in tough times, knows they can do something a little better, a little more efficiently, a little more smartly.

The problem is business owners often forget!

They get so lost in the day to day workings of their business that they forget they have the ability to step back and think, plan and, yes, even dream!

As a business coach, one of the greatest benefits you bring tomyour client is the space to breathe.  The space to think afresh.  The space to take control of their outcomes.

So when it comes to moving forward, take a step back first.

Start at the beginnng

bookkeeper strugglingI’m Nick Bolton, founder of the Smart School of Coaching and I have a confession.

Rapid Results Business Coaching was an accident.

It was the result of a chance find on a speculative search for a half-needed service.

As a business owner of 12 years and having just moved to a new town, I was looking for a business networking group.

Searching online, I found a one that looked pretty active and in that group I saw the name and website address of a local bookkeeper.  Now, I hadn’t been consciously looking for a new bookkeeper but it made sense to make contact as I needed one, he was nearby and seemed fine.

And that’s where it all started.

You see the bookkeeper was clearly good at what he did as I discovered when I met him but I might never have met him at all.  His contact page on his site didn’t function, his site gave little information and it wasn’t clear at all how I could take the next step.  But I persevered and managed to connect and meet him.

Over the course of our 30 minute chat, I realised that, as much as I didn’t know about bookkeeping, he didn’t know anything about marketing and he was struggling to get clients.  And whilst I could hire him for what I needed, there wasn’t anyone obviously reaching out to someone like him.  Someone without a huge marketing budget, or an expansive social media wallet.  Someone who wasn’t looking for a “rebrand” or an end-to-end business plan.

What this guy needed was simple solutions, delivered fast to get great results and to know he could sit down with a person and talk about his needs.  He needed a REAL local small business coach.

And sadly they’re few and far between.

And so was born Rapid Results Business Coaching, a division of the Smart School which trains, establishes and supports local business coaches with real tactical, strategic know how and a passion to make a difference.

This blog is dedicated to small business owners, the self-employed, solopreneurs and all those the big boys forget about.

My mission: to stop needless failures and loss of livelihood and support people to achieve their business dreams with a profitable, enjoyable and sustainable business through the sharing of information and the creation of local coaches.
